With crochet you will also be able to make various useful items you can use in your day to day. You could make bags, blankets, toilet covers, and other object covers. With some objects you will have to measure to see if you need to add more rounds of stitches or make less than the patterns in order to make them fit.
With these sort of items it will better to work on cotton items as well in order to wash them without worry. Bags however would be ok with acrylic yarn as long as you don't wash it in hot water.
